Does ‘IDS’ stand for ‘Iain’s Dodgy Stats’?
Pressure is mounting on Iain Duncan Smith over his fondness for wild claims and dodgy statistics.
A new petition, signed by more than 42,000 people in the last few days, calls on the work and pensions secretary “to be held to account for the use of his statistics”.
Disabled activists Jayne Linney and Debbie Sayers wrote: “We experience pain and suffering ourselves and see it in our friends, families and colleagues. It is one thing to live with the physical challenges of a disability. It is quite another to hear lies and misinformation every day from our own government.
“Recent reports suggest that the Work and Pensions Secretary may have misrepresented government statistics to make a political point.
“We are concerned that this is just the tip of the iceberg. We believe that Iain Duncan Smith has built a wall of misinformation to discredit all claimants of DLA when the fraud rate of DLA is a tiny 0.5%.”
The petition comes after PCS challenged Duncan Smith to prove anyone is better off on benefits.
PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka wrote in the New Statesman: “The next time Iain Duncan Smith claims people are better off on benefits, hand him a pen and paper, and ask him to show you how.”
