Bedroom Tax: Even the Tories are now rebelling against the hated levy …

In a separate embarrassment, one of their councillors has quit the party in disgust at the hated levy.
Mr Shapps is MP for Welwyn Hatfield, Herts, where 100 three-bed houses are being reclassified as two beds so tenants can avoid the tax.

Tory councillors are stipulating if they are smaller than 50 square feet they will be viewed as boxrooms.

“That’s small enough not to be a bedroom,” said Cllr Roger Trigg. Meanwhile Cllr Barbara Ainge has left the ruling Tory group on Wellingborough Council, Northants, saying she could no longer support taxing tenants for extra rooms.

They face losing 14 per cent of housing benefit if they are assessed as having one more bedroom than they need, and 25 per cent for two or more.
