Dr Andy Mitchell, London's top medical official said “Services aren’t safe"
The NHS was plunged further
into crisis today after experts warned that wards are “unsafe” and free
treatment is under threat.
Top health officials said the Government’s spending squeeze has left the NHS on the brink.
In a leaked document, the NHS Confederation - representing all health providers - said without a radical boost in funding, free care for all would disappear.
In a leaked document the organisation says: “It is very possible the current basis of the NHS free for all at the point of need will become unsustainable in the future.”
The revelation came amid warnings that the NHS was now so short-staffed it was unsafe.
Dr Andy Mitchell, the top medical official in London, said: “At times, throughout the week, even throughout the day, services aren’t safe.”
He blamed staff shortages for that.
He added: “What we cannot do is carry on with the idea that all hospitals provide a whole range of services.
“That is completely unsustainable and would become, frankly, unsafe, and is becoming unsafe in many areas.”
