Carer must pay bedroom tax or lose vital hospital equipment for disabled wife

Jayson Carmichael says he has no choice but to pay the savage tax – his wife Charlotte sleeps on a special hospital mattress to ease agonising bed sores caused by her spina bifida

Carer Jayson Carmichael says he has no choice but to pay the bedroom tax – because the alternative would be to hand back the special hospital equipment his disabled wife desperately needs, the Sunday People has reported .

Wife Charlotte sleeps on a special hospital mattress to ease agonising bed sores caused by her spina bifida, while he uses a single bed in their smaller second room.

According to new regulations, the couple are under-occupying the specially adapted flat in Southport, Merseyside and would have to move to a one-bedroom property or lose 14 per cent of their housing benefit.

Former hotel worker Jayson, 50, was stunned to receive a letter saying they would have to make up the £11.90 shortfall from his carer’s allowance.

The pair have to use both bedrooms as 40-year-old Charlotte’s electric mattress means there is not enough space in one for two beds
