Ministers are expected to unveil a new US-style scheme at their party conference next week
Long-term unemployed people are to be forced to work unpaid or be stripped of
their benefits under new Tory plans.
Ministers are expected to unveil a new US-style scheme at their party conference next week.
Claimants who go through the Work Programme, the Government’s back-to-work scheme, but do not find a job will have to take part in work experience or unpaid community activities.
Anyone refusing to do so will face losing welfare payments.
The news comes as it was revealed only 22% of people who joined the work scheme two years ago have found long-term employment.
And of the 1.31 million referred to the scheme at any point, just 168,000 got work.
But Employment Minister Mark Hoban said it was giving “hope that people can achieve their aspiration of looking after themselves and their families”.
