‘A London-based NHS cancer specialist claims charges are necessary if patients are to keep on receiving the best treatment.
Dr Ajay Aggarwal, of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said “stagnating NHS budgets” make the current system unsustainable.
In the Journal of Cancer Policy, he said: “New approaches to paying for cancer care need to be found. Cancer is too personal and emotive for the public to accept decisions on restricting access to cancer treatments.
“User charges could provide the key to long-term sustainability of high-quality cancer care.”’
