Govt cuts safety inspections in care homes and other work sectors by 11,000 a year

Among more recent prosecutions by the Health & Safety Executive was the case of national nursing home firm, MNS Care Plc.

After failings were found at one home, inspectors visited a second, where they found more problems.

These included no valves to limit the temperature of bath water to prevent residents being scalded and a bath sling that had been condemned, but was still in use. Three others were in such poor condition that inspectors ordered them to be removed immediately.

MNS Care, run by Sandip and Priti Ruparelia, of Borehamwood, Herts, was fined £30,000 at Westminster magistrates court.

HSE inspector Vicky Fletcher commented: “Fortunately, in this case no one was injured as a result of MNS Care’s failure to take adequate safety precautions, but all too often these types of failures have tragic consequences.”

Yet the Government is slashing the number of annual safety inspections carried out in care homes and areas such as farming, the riskiest of all work sectors.

In total they are being cut by 11,000, or a third, based on the recommendations in the 2011 report, Good Health & Safety, Good for Everyone.
