When is a bedroom not a bedroom? When the council says it isn’t, so you can avoid the hated Bedroom Tax .
Leeds City Council is considering plans to convert bedrooms in social housing to studies, living rooms or other spaces.
On the face of it, a good idea. Better than bricking a room up or tearing down walls, as has also been suggested.
Five-bed houses could be reduced to four, three to two and two-bed flats to one in a scheme that would affect 865 unpopular or underoccupied homes.
The council want to make sure people can live comfortably in the city without the worry of not being able to pay the rent.
What a refreshingly considerate attitude towards tenants!
A Labour idea, naturally. And opposed by the Tories, obviously.
I hope other social housing providers come up with equally ingenious ideas to allow people to stay in their homes without being mulcted by millionaire Chancellor George Osborne .
The conversion scheme might also lead to a rise in sales of put-up beds. But who’s checking?
