Bedroom tax ‘a mistake’, says senior Lib Dem

A senior Liberal Democrat sparked huge applause by branding the bedroom tax ‘a mistake’, at the (Lib Dem annual party) conference in Glasgow.

Baroness Shirley Williams, a founding member of the Social Democrat Party, and now a life peer, also expressed concerns over the housing benefit cap.

Addressing the Scottish Liberal Democrat conference, which took place on the first day of the main conference, she said: ‘I find it very hard to raise enthusiasm for the bedroom tax, which think actually was a mistake.’

Around 100 protestors rallied outside the Scotish Exhibition and Conference Centre to protest against the policy.

A motion opposing it is due to be debated by the main conference on Monday.

Baroness Williams also said the housing benefit cap was unfair for people who lived in areas with high rents, such as London and Edinburgh, and should be reviewed.
