The audit firm PWC has examined the DWP in relation to Universal Credit and found it wanting.
The PWC report highlighted concerns about a lack of ministerial accountability and found that a secretary was approving some costly contracts, in contravention of strict procurement rules.
The report came to light after DWP bigwigs were hauled before the Public Accounts Committee yesterday. The chair, Margaret Hodge, described a National Audit Office investigation into the DWP's accounting procedures as "damning" but said that the PWC report "was even worse". She claimed the DWP had sat on the report from PWC for six months and said that it described Universal Credit as an "out-of-control project".
She summarised by telling the civil service head of the DWP that "PWC basically damns your control system".
