Greek workers took to the streets in their hundreds of thousands today, with a general strike against deepening austerity measures.
Transport, hospitals and air-traffic control have all been affected, with trade unionists marching to Syntagma Square in Athens.
The strike is taking place in the backdrop of Greek government talks with debt inspectors from the IMF, European Central Bank and European Commission, known collectively as the troika, over what measures are needed to plug a budget gap next year.
The All Workers Militant Front (PAME) which is leading the protests said in a statement:
“We must build our own alliance. The working class will find its allies among the thousands of self-employed who close their shop, among the thousands of farmers who loose their farms, the women who experience the drama of the whole family, the children, the young people who cannot study, cannot find a job to live.Source
“We have to answer to the escalation of the aggressiveness of the capital and the state, to the mechanisms that nourishes. The criminal – Nazist gang of the Golden Dawn must be condemned, isolated and uprooted from every workplace and sector. It is the monster of the capitalist ownership, exploitation, of the employers and state terrorism.”
