MPs slate ‘failure’ of universal credit
IAIN DUNCAN SMITH is facing new embarrassment as MPs turn on his flagship universal credit scheme.
A hard hitting report by the influential House of Commons public accounts select committee will highlight a catalogue of failures in the delivery of the programme, which is designed to simplify the benefits system.
The study, to be published this week, is expected to be highly critical of the “leadership” of the project in the Department for Work and Pensions. Although it will stop short of attacking the secretary of state personally, it is expected to accuse his department of wasting millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money by mismanaging the IT procurement process.
It is also expected to accuse the department of attempting to gloss over serious problems and failures associated with introducing the new system.
