Norman Tebbit and Edwina Currie remind us how heartless and shameless the Tories really are - by John Prescott


The former Deputy Prime Minister and Sunday Mirror columnist is not surprised by the latest rants from the one-time Thatcher ministers

Thank God we still have the likes of Norman Tebbit and Edwina Currie to remind us how heartless the Tories are.

We’ve had Tebbit slamming Labour’s call for an apology from the Tories for their senseless destruction of the mining industry by provoking a strike that decimated communities.

Recent Government papers revealed what we always thought at the time. Thatcher had plans to close 75 mines and bring in troops to break a strike.

But Tebbit – Thatcher’s cheerleader-in-chief – said of Labour’s demand: “Next they’ll want an apology for freeing the Falklands.”

What a cheap shot.

And Currie – a minister who was forced to resign after prompting a false salmonella scare that led to the unnecessary slaughter of four million hens and a 60 per cent drop in egg sales – said it’s not this Government’s senseless policies that make people poor.

It’s food banks.

She also said food-bank use has tripled in the past year because more people now want free food.
