Thursday at conference: campaign against welfare reform
From every direction the welfare state seems to be under threat with sanctions changes to Jobseeker's Allowance, the proposed benefit caps, the Bedroom tax, and hostile reporting of claimants in the media resulting in verbal and physical assaults on members.
Motions A90, A92 and A540 called for a fully-funded welfare state, condemned the introduction of the hated Bedroom tax and instructed the NEC to campaign for the removal of sanctions - relating to the new Universal Credit - against part time workers.
Moving motion A90 Rob Russell of DWP Birmingham South said: “The government’s attacks on the unemployed, the sick, the disabled and ourselves as civil servants are the most vicious yet seen. The rhetoric being used – picked up by the right wing leaning press – attempts to set up a skivers Vs strivers mentality and debate.”
